In no fewer than 24 months and 2,500 hours of experience, an Associate Real Estate Trainee Appraiser may become a real estate appraiser and upgrade to a Certified Residential Appraiser by successfully completing a total of 200 hours of state-approved coursework and passing a state examination for an Illinois appraisal license. These 200 hours include the original 75 hours taken to receive the Associate Real Estate Trainee Appraisal license. The Certified Residential Appraiser candidate is solely responsible for his or her own work and can if they wish open their own appraisal company. Certified Residential Appraisers may appraise single family homes and 2-4 residential income units without regard to transaction value or complexity, as long as candidates meet the USPAP competency rules. This classification does not include the appraisal of subdivisions.

Certified Residential Appraiser Course Schedule
Real Estate Appraiser Illinois - Illinois Appraisal Education
Course Times: Classes meet consecutively from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Additional Requirements for the General Residential Certification:

     Be at least 21 years old

     College-level requirements: Associate degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree, 21 semester credit hours covering the following subject matter courses: English Composition; Principles of Economics (Micro or Macro); Finance; Algebra, Geometry or higher mathematics; Statistics; Computer Science; and Business or Real Estate Law.

     Provide the state with a two-year Experience Log. LOG-APP – 2,500 hours of appraisal experience. Obtain the form at http://www.obre.state.il.us/realest/Forms/logapp.pdf

     Submit proof of course work in the form of an original sealed school transcript. Transcripts, for all curriculums, are valid indefinitely.
